Project Scope
Axis was hired by a Holiday Inn franchisee to plan and design a new five-story, 116-room hotel in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The proposed hotel is located on a 2.1-acre site just off I-20. To accommodate the 80,191 SF hotel and 152 parking spaces, the building had to be located one foot off the rear property line and two feet off the retaining wall supporting I-20. Setback variances were required to achieve these minimal setbacks.
The proposed structure includes poured concrete foundations with structural steel beams and columns on the first floor. Fire-treated wood stud framing and TJI floor framing was incorporated in the design of the upper floors. Elevator shafts consisted of eight-inch CMU. The footing plan had to carefully consider footing locations to avoid bedrock.
The exterior facade includes a manufactured stone veneer on the first floor with built-up painted EIFS on the remaining floors with architectural lighting.
